Advice and safety

Where does the advice come from?

Every safety message is tied to a named UK source, listed with links in Settings ▸ About & sources: The Lullaby Trust for safer sleep, room temperature and bedding; the NHS for fever and sun safety; the T.I.C.K.S. rule for slings and carriers; Good Egg Car Safety for car seats. Tog ratings come from manufacturers’ charts.

Is this medical advice?

No. Little Layers gives dressing guidance. It can’t see your child and can’t tell how well or unwell they are. If you’re worried, contact your health visitor, GP or NHS 111. In an emergency, call 999.

The tog advice doesn’t match my sleeping bag’s label

Follow the label. Manufacturers’ charts differ, and the app works from a typical one. If you tell the app which bags you own (Settings ▸ Sleep settings), it only recommends from those.

Why is it telling me about car seats when I said pram?

The cold-weather car seat warning shows on any cold trip, because pram walks often end in a car. Tell us if you find it unhelpful; it’s under review.

Weather

The forecast is for the wrong place

The app follows your location when you allow it, or the place you’ve picked at the top of the screen. Tap it to switch back to Current location.

I declined location access. Is the app broken?

No. Add a place instead (tap the place name at the top, or Settings ▸ Saved places) and everything works, widget included. You can change your mind in your phone’s settings.

Widget

The widget shows old data

The widget works offline from the last forecast the app fetched, so it costs no battery and works with no signal. Open the app to refresh it.

The widget shows the wrong place

The widget follows the last place you looked at in the app.

Sharing the family (iPhone)

We’re on different Apple accounts. Can we still share?

Yes. Go to Settings ▸ Family and send an invite. Once they accept, your children and places arrive by sync. Both of you can edit, and the most recent change wins.

The invite didn’t work

Check both phones are signed in to iCloud with iCloud Drive on, then tap the invite link again. If the app opens on “add a child” instead of joining, close and reopen it.

Can I stop sharing?

Yes. Settings ▸ Family, then Stop sharing (if you invited) or Leave (if you joined). Nobody’s data is deleted.

Is sharing available on Android?

Not yet. The Android app keeps everything on that phone.

Room sensor (HomeKit, iPhone)

Which sensors work?

Anything in HomeKit that reports a current temperature, including thermostats such as Heatmiser Neo.

It can’t find my sensor

The app only asks HomeKit for permission when you tap to connect, so check you’ve allowed it and that the sensor appears in Apple’s Home app. If it does and the app still can’t see it, email us the make and model.

Do I need a sensor?

No. Set the room temperature by hand on the bedtime screen. On Android it’s always set by hand.

Notifications

I’m not getting the morning briefing

Check Settings ▸ Notifications in the app, and your phone’s notification settings for Little Layers. Briefings are scheduled from the last forecast the app fetched, so open the app once a day to keep them accurate.

Privacy

What do you collect?

Nothing. There’s no account, no analytics, no advertising and no server of ours. Your children’s details live on your device and, on iPhone, in your own iCloud. See the privacy policy.

How do I delete everything?

Delete the app. On iPhone, also remove its iCloud data in iOS Settings ▸ your name ▸ iCloud ▸ Manage Account Storage. On Android everything lives on the phone, so deleting the app removes it all.
